CF disrupt enemy operations, destroys two mobile caches
Multi-National Division – North PAO

MOSUL, Iraq – Coalition Forces discovered two vehicles used by enemy fighters to transport weapons and explosives throughout the al-Wahda neighborhood of eastern Mosul, Iraq, Oct. 17.

“This is another great case of Coalition Forces staying focused and alert to things that didn’t look quite right while they were out conducting their mission,” said Maj. Roderick Cunningham, spokesperson for the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division.  “They acted quickly and were able to stop two vehicles packed with weapons that were clearly intended for attacks against Coalition Soldiers and Iraqi Security Forces.”

While conducting a security mission in the al-Wahda neighborhood, Soldiers from 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, discovered two vehicles which served as mobile caches for terrorists.

In the first incident, 2-7 Cav. Soldiers observed four unknown enemy fighters carrying AK-47 assault rifles riding in a black Opel.  Realizing they had been noticed, the four occupants immediately fled on foot leaving the vehicle cache behind containing a rocket-propelled grenade launcher with three rockets, two AK-47 assault rifles, two hand grenades and over 500 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition in 30 magazines.

Simultaneously, several blocks away, the occupants of a blue Opel hatchback were observed trying to flee the area.  Cavalry Soldiers maneuvered on the vehicle causing it to crash and forcing its occupants to flee.  While searching the wrecked vehicle, two PKC machine guns were discovered as well as another RPG launcher with two rockets, four more hand grenades and 300 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition in six more magazines.

All of the confiscated weapons were reconsolidated and the two vehicles were destroyed to prevent their further use by enemy fighters.
