IEDs target civilians, ISF in Kirkuk

Multi-National Division – North PAO

TIKRIT, Iraq – Kirkuk’s Provincial Joint Communications Center reported a vehicleborne improvised explosive device, May 13.

The motorcycle was parked outside an elementary school on a route that leads to an open market in the city of Kirkuk. Initial reports indicated a car was destroyed and 12 civilians were injured in the blast.

In a separate incident, Kirkuk’s PJCC reported an Iraqi Army patrol was targeted by an IED near a police station in the city, May 14.

No injuries were reported from this attack.

An Iraqi explosive ordnance disposal team and the Iraqi Police Emergency Services Unit arrived at both scenes. Evidence was collected and investigations are currently ongoing in both cases.

“These attacks continue to highlight the disregard these criminals have for human life and for the future of this province. Placing an explosive device in front of an elementary school where children learn and play; you can’t get much lower than that. Their murderous intent is clear. However, the citizens of Kirkuk and their ISF will not be forced into submission, the reverse is evident. Both the ISF and the citizens of Kirkuk are united in the fight against these individuals. Attacks like these are not tolerated in this province. I am confident that information will soon be provided that will bring the guilty to justice,” said Col. David Paschal, commander for the 1st Brigade, 10th Mountain Division.
