ISF defenders wounded by VBIED while evacuating citizens

Multi-National Division – North PAO

TIKRIT, Iraq – Quick thinking and brave actions were key factors as Iraqi Security Forces identified a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device while on patrol and began evacuating local citizens from the area when the car bomb detonated in Hawijah, Iraq, Oct. 18.

“The quick recognition that this vehicle was a threat and swift action by ISF undoubtedly saved lives and prevented many more people from being harmed,” said Col. David Paschal, commander, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division.

“This attack was an act of cowardice by terrorists targeting ISF and (who) selflessly put themselves in harm’s way to save innocent people.”

Soldiers from 4th Iraqi Army Division, patrolling with Iraqi police, discovered the VBIED and began evacuating local citizens from the area when the car bomb exploded wounding one IP, two Iraqi soldiers and 30 civilians.

ISF evacuated the casualties to a nearby hospital.

The incident is currently under investigation by ISF.
