Multi-National Corps – Iraq Public Affairs Office, Camp Victory APO AE 09342 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE RELEASE No. 20080808-01 Aug. 8, 2008 ISF detain six suspected terrorists, nine others in northern Iraq (Balad) Multi-National Corps – Iraq BALAD, Iraq – Iraqi Security Forces detained six suspected terrorists and nine others during separate operations in northern Iraq Aug. 2 – 5. The 3rd Iraqi Army Division detained a suspected al-Qaeda in Iraq improvised explosive device cell leader near Sinjar Aug. 5. The suspected terrorist, allegedly an emir of IED operations in Mosul, reportedly came to the area to elude capture in Mosul. In an operation in Mosul Aug. 5, Mosul Special Weapons and Tactics team detained a suspected member of the Islamic State of Iraq, a front organization for the foreign-led AQI, and five others. Mosul SWAT conducted the operation to clear a riverbank of safe houses used by ISI/AQI to store weapons and to traffic men, weapons and equipment across the river. The 2nd Iraqi Army Division detained four suspected ISI/AQI members in al- Hawd, approximately 55 kilometers south of Mosul Aug. 4. The suspects are reportedly involved with IED cells in the area. One of the suspects is said to be a key terrorist facilitator and recruiter in the Tigris River Valley. Two of the other suspects are allegedly IED emplacers in the Tigris River Valley. The Iraqi Army also detained another suspect during the operation. In al-Karama Aug. 3, the 2nd IA Division detained a suspected member of an IED cell who is believed to manufacture and emplace IEDs and home-made explosives. The individual allegedly is part of an ISI/AQI cell and was an IED facilitator in the al-Karama neighborhood. In Ninewa Province Aug. 2, Tal Afar Special Weapons and Tactics team detained two suspected ISI/AQI cell members believed to be facilitating terrorists.
