Ramadan disrupted by VBIEDs in Northern Iraq Multi-National Division – North

TIKRIT, Iraq – Suspected Al-Qaeda terrorists initiated a vehicle-borne improvised

explosive attacks directed against innocent Civilians and Iraqi Security Forces in

Nineveh province and Salah ad Din province, Oct. 10.

“These senseless acts of brutality during Ramadan show complete disrespect for

the faiths and traditions of the Iraqi people,” said Col. Gary Patton, chief of staff for

Multi-National Division-North. “The brave men of the Iraqi Security Forces will not allow

al-Qaeda to intimidate them even with these disgraceful acts of violence.”

The first attack, a suicide VBIED, was directed against a security checkpoint,

west of the village of Khursabad, targeting a Kurdish Party headquarters building. Iraqi

police responded to the attack, securing the area while ambulances treated and

transported casualties to a nearby hospital. Two Civilians and two Iraqi soldiers were

killed, while 16 Citizens and five Iraqi soldiers were wounded. The blast also damaged

three buildings and six vehicles.

A second VBIED detonated east of Tikrit, killing one Iraqi policeman and one local

Iraqi Citizen. Twenty-two people were also wounded. 4th Iraqi Army Division responded

to the scene and secured the site while first responders from fire, rescue and IPs began

rescue efforts. All casualties were transported to the Tikrit Teaching Hospital.
