BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan – Afghan National Police detained a key terrorist leader yesterday in the Bati Kot district of Nangarhar province, Afghanistan.
Haji Raiz was arrested as he left his residence Tuesday morning and turned over to Coalition forces in the area. The ANP, advised by Coalition forces, followed the arrest by conducting a search of Raiz’s residence and confiscated bomb-making material.
Raiz is considered by Coalition forces to be a major improvised explosive device facilitator for both the Taliban and al-Qaida in the Nangarhar area. He is believed to support suicide bombers as they move through Eastern Afghanistan by providing funding, IED materials and safe haven for the insurgents.
“This operation was a perfect example of the growing effectiveness of the Afghan National Police,” said Army Maj. Chris Belcher, a Combined Joint Task Force-82 spokesperson.
“The arrest of Raiz is a huge blow to the Nangarhar insurgent network. “
