With the nonsensical dance of nonbinding resolutions in the House and Senate over (for now), it is time to focus on more productive activities. Namely: looking forward to 2008, and beginning the task of idenitfying opportunities for victory-oriented candidates to unseat White Flag incumbents.
There is work to be done. First, we need to research the White Flag incumbents we beileve might be beatable. Our starting list should be as follows: - Any White Flag Republican, defined as one of the 17 Representatives who voted for the House resolution, or one of the seven Senators who voted for cloture on the Senate resolution
- Any Democrat in a district (or state) that was won by President Bush in both 2000 and 2004. This indicates that the seat may be vulnerable to a (victory-oriented) Republican challenger.
What we want to understand for each incumbent is: - What their margin of victory was on their last election
- Who their opponent was and their position on the war
- Whether the district or state was carried by President Bush in 2000 and 2004, and what the margins were
- How much money the incumbent took in and spent in their last election campaign
- How much money they are reported to have on hand in current campaign funds
Where can this information be found? Basic information on the incumbents district / state can be found at House.gov and Senate.gov. The campaign finance info is best researched at OpenSecrets.org . And election results can be found on just about any major news site: Google '2006 election results', for example, and you'll find plenty of sources. If you want to help in this effort, dive right in! Pick a known White Flag Republican from the list below (click read more), or take on the more open-ended task of researching vulnerable Democrats. When you've found the information above, post it to this thread in our newly-renamed White Flag Incument project team forum. Eventually, we will create a more sophisticated database/application for tracking and browsing the candidates, but for now, just add your info to the forum thread so we at least have it all in one place. But identifying vulnerable incumbents is only the first step. An even more important one is finding victory-oriented candidates to stand against them. That's where our Victory Candidates forum comes in. If you know of a strong candidate to put up against one of our White Flag incumbents, post in the forum and describe their credentials and why you think they should run. We're particularly interested in candidates who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan, so military veterans are a definite plus. Suggestions and ideas on this process are also welcome. So dive in, and let's get moving! -- N.Z. Discuss this article on the forums.
