Time To Act: Republican Representatives Opposing Victory Print E-mail

The most depressing --- and disturbing -- spectacle of this morning's House debates on the Democrats proposed resolution opposing the surge was the sight of a handful of Republican Representatives rising to speak in favor of the resolution.

We've made a point here at The Victory Caucus to highlight those leaders who are standing firm on the war and who are committed victory: men like Senator Jim DeMint and Representative John Carter.

Now, however, it is time to focus on those of our leaders who are chosing what they perceive (wrongly) to be the politically expedient course instead of what they must know is the right course. The reality of the mathematics in the House is grim: it is highly likely, if not certain, that the Democrats have sufficient votes to ensure that their resolution passes.

Our goal, then, is to minimze its margin of passage: and in particular, to convince those who should know better --- our Republican members of Congress -- to do the right thing.

I would therefore ask each of you to contact your own Representative, and ask their staff to go on-the-record stating that they will oppose the Democrats' resolution.  If they refuse, ask why not, and express your disappointment in their decision.  (You can find your Representative's web page and contact information here .)

Once you have an answer --- and only a definitive, on-the-record "yes we will vote against the resolution" will do -- post the results of your conversation on this forum thread . We'll be collecting all the answers, and building up an organized list of those Republicans who are standing firm --- and those who need further encouragment to do what is right.

Beyond your own Representative, I woudl also encourage you to contact all of the Representatives below. These are some of the Republican Representatives who rose today to speak against the troop surge, and in favor of the Democrats' resolution. Call them; fax them; email them, and make clear that to oppose the President's plan to win this war is simply unacceptable.

Subject: Attack From The Left
Dear Fellow McCain Supporter:
I read the craziest blog you have ever come across with the following junk written about John:
…Certainly not John McCain. Pete told me the story about when he drove a taxi in New York City after he dropped out of graduate school. It was about the time that the North Vietnamese had released their prisoners of war back in 1972 after the anti-war protestors forced the end of that war and freed them. A soldier who just got off the plane from the Hanoi Hilton with a few years growth of beard went out of his way to jump into Pete’s taxi because Pete had the same crop of anti-war hair on his face. “How was it over there?” Pete asked sympathetically. “They were no worse than the LAPD,” came the laughing reply of the soldier. That’s a true story, not election year propaganda. So whatever the pain in his suffering as a POW in that utterly stupid war that murdered 57,000 American servicemen and two million North Vietnamese for no good reason other than the promise of offshore oil and the propping up of an utterly corrupt regime in South Vietnam, let us be careful in electing John McCain, single minded army brat and husband of an upper class millionaire, because he was a hero in a war that could have no heroes. If elected, his POW traumatized mind will fight the Vietnam War all over again, in Iraq. No, Padre John is just another one of them, another one of the loony self-interested ever-deceptive Republicans who have no real feeling for any of the many who suffer other than in the pretty speech of a politician at election time.
Mostly the website called www.matrix-evolutions.com is anti-Obama and for Hillary Clinton, after the fact, which is a bit confusing, or some kind of trick. These people are complete whackos, a pacifist PhD evolutionist and his religion hating wife who was once married to a fundamentalist minister. But they have some very nasty things to say about Senator McCain even beyond what I’m sending and the woman was on CBS News and in the New York Times and talked about on Rush Limbaugh and written up in the Denver daily newspaper the day John talked in Denver.
